Blackberry Champagne Margarita

Blackberry Champagne Margarita

So it’s been kind of a crazy week. I think I spent maybe 16 hours in my office — the rest of the time I was either running around attending different sessions at a conference or learning how to take control of my career as an empowered female lawyer. It was all very cool, and I learned a ton, but man…I’m tired. Thank God it’s Friday.    Dan and I have been on green-thumb kick lately, so I was really looking forward to coming home today and getting elbow deep in soil and green things. The balcony looks a little worse for the wear now, but I successfully re-potted the lemon tree and the big (nameless) tree on the left. I even planted a...

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

The last time I had an Irish Car Bomb was senior year of college. As I recall, I didn’t even really want to drink it. I hate beer, and I stay away from whiskey if I can help it, but my friend Melissa told me that if I chugged the drink really quickly all the ingredients would mix together and taste exactly like a chocolate milkshake. She LIED. The Car Bomb was nothing like a chocolate milkshake. As I choked down the thick fizzy brew, all I could taste was the bitter yeastiness of Guinness, the burn of cheap whiskey (Canadian Mist), and the faintest hint of sweetness from the generic cream liqueur we bought instead of real Baileys. It. Was. Not. Delicious. I was not happy....

White Sangria

White Sangria

For me, Superbowl is as much about the eating and drinking as it is about the football. Maybe more, actually.  That’s why it’s always a kind of a bummer when I go to a Superbowl party and the only thing around for me to wash down all those delightfully salty, greasy, junky snacks is beer. I am so not a beer girl. So tomorrow, when Dan and the guys are throwing back brewskies and screaming at the TV, I’m going to be calmly sipping on sweet, fruity, refreshing sangria. Bottoms up! White Sangria (Inspired by the delicious sangrias served at Cities Restaurant Bar and Lounge) Ingredients: - 1 bottle white wine - 3 oz Peach Schnapps - 4 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur -...

Kahlua Cake Trifles

Kahlua Cake Trifles

Hi guys! Hope everyone had a fun and food-filled Christmas. Mine was pretty awesome. Dan and I went up to Massachusetts to spend the holidays with his family and between the two back-to-back holiday parties, the generalized excitement over our engagement, the many many bottles of wine, the mountains of presents, and the groaning tables loaded down with delicious food, it was pretty much impossible not to have a fantastic time. Speaking of groaning tables…Dan’s family really knows how to cook! I’ve enjoyed his mom’s cooking many times before, but never on such a grand scale. We ate so well — honey BBQ wings, stuffed mushrooms, racks of lamb, baked halibut, broccoli & cheese, green beans, perfectly cooked prime rib, roasted potatoes, Christmas cookies, truffles,...

Cranberry Egg Nog

Cranberry Egg Nog

For this month’s Improv Cooking Challenge, the two key ingredients are egg nog and cranberries. I was planning to make egg nog cupcakes with a cranberry-based buttercream, but…I ran out of sugar. I know. A good food blogger never runs out of staples like sugar/butter/flour, but somehow it happened. And it was tragic. But, while I didn’t have sugar, I did have eggs, milk, cream, spices, rum, and a whole lot of cranberries. So I decided to just throw creativity to the wind and just make good ol’ fashioned, rummy egg nog. To stay within the guidelines of the challenge, I infused my rum with cranberries, blended the rum-soaked berries into a boozy puree, and added both to my ‘nog. It was delicious. The first...

Fizzy Apple Cider Punch

Fizzy Apple Cider Punch

What is going on with the weather, people? One second it’s 55 degrees and freezing everywhere, the next second I’m running outside with a warm breeze on my face.  And, rumor has it that it’s going to be 80 degrees and sunny on Sunday. Looks like summer isn’t giving up without a fight. Or, you know, global warming is changing the progression of seasons as we know it. When you think of drinks for fall, what springs to mind is probably something that warms you from the inside out — hot apple cider, hot chocolate, mulled wine…A cold, fruity cocktail? Probably not. But, with the sudden return of warm weather, I figured a refreshing drink on the balcony would be the perfect way to...

Twisted Strawberry Lemonade

Twisted Strawberry Lemonade

Last week, David Leibovitz’s blog had a delicious-looking guest post on strawberry vodka. Soon after that, TasteSpotting and FoodGawker exploded with entries showcasing different fruit-infused vodkas. Since everyone else was doing it… Yeah, I hopped on the infused vodka train. Ripe strawberries smell so good! And after three days in a tightly sealed jar with said berries, the vodka smelled pretty good too. One whiff and I had visions of delicious strawberry-flavored cocktails dancing before my eyes. Some people say summer is all about the beach and weekend cook-outs…I say it’s about the drinks. Gotta stay hydrated in the heat, you know! And what’s better for the body and soul on a hot summer day than lemonade? Strawberry Lemonade. With vodka. Twisted Strawberry Lemonade...

Blueberry-Limoncello Cooler

Blueberry-Limoncello Cooler

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I’m pretty sure the limoncello is getting stronger. It’s only been two days, but when I poured myself a glass yesterday, the lemony-boozy fumes about knocked me out on the first sip. It was still very sweet and lemony and all, but…whew. I can see why people say the stuff is lethal. This is definitely a leisurely-post-meal-sipping kind of beverage.  Mixed with tonic water and blueberries though, the limoncello lost its intense boozy kick. In fact, the cocktail tasted almost exactly like Sprite! Don’t be fooled though, the alcohol is definitely still there — it’s just diluted enough by the fizz to not be quite so in-your-face. Proceed with caution, folks.  Blueberry-Limoncello Cooler (Adapted from Giada De Laurentiis’s...

Limoncello

Limoncello

OK, so the thing about summer is that it’s so frickin’ hot that I never really have any motivation to cook anything. Who wants to stand in front of a hot stove/oven when it’s 95 and humid? I mean, yes, I have A/C, but just knowing that the air outside is thick enough to swim through really takes away a person’s appetite. So lately all I really want to do after work is sit on my couch, in my air conditioned apartment, and suck down an endless stream of cold beverages.Frozen margaritas, rum punch, lemonade, daiquiris, agua frescas…etc etc. After a string of recent posts on summer beverages, my friend Karen accused me of getting lazy with my blog. How rude! I obviously did...

Pomegranate-Champagne Rum Punch

Pomegranate-Champagne Rum Punch

“Today I don’t feel like doing anything, I just wanna lay in bed. Don’t feel like picking up my phone, so leave a message at the tone, ‘Cause today I swear I’m not doing anything.” I’m loving this new Bruno Mars song today! It really captures the way I feel about how my Saturday is going to be. Today, I’m not going to do anything but lay on the couch, relax (maybe nap), and drink a ton of this super delicious, refreshing, and delightfully boozy pomegranate-champagne punch. Happy long weekend, everyone! Pomegranate-Champagne Rum Punch (Adapted from Ezra Pound Cake’s recipe) ** Tastes kind of like sangria, but sweeter. Yum! Ingredients: - 1-1/2 cups pomegranate juice - 1 cup lemonade - 1/4 cup white rum...
