Alcohol

Mango Daiquiris

Mango Daiquiris

I think it’s pretty obvious by now that I’m a girly drink kind of gal. I mean, I could try to roll with the boys and throw back beers and booze on the rocks, but why suffer? I like sugar. I like fruit. I don’t like the taste of alcohol. It would just be silly to pretend otherwise. Sure, I suppose if I could acquire a taste for beer my bar tabs would be a lot lower, but…not worth it. I need to have fruity, blended drinks in my life, damnit. Daiquiris are pretty high on my list of favorite blended drinks, not only because they are sweet and fruity and delicious, but also because I associate them with summer, hammocks, sandy beaches, and...

Caramel-Whiskey Banana Bread

Caramel-Whiskey Banana Bread

I was going to make pate a choux last night, but on my way to the pantry to grab flour, I was stopped in my tracks by the scent of fermented fruit. Again? I just finished those frickin’ strawberries! Have they come back to haunt me? Further investigation led to the discovery of two very ripe bananas on top of the fridge. Crap. I had bought a huge bunch of them last week to eat for breakfast, ate a couple, skipped breakfast a few days in a row, and then completely forgot about the stragglers. And now they were reasserting their presence in a big way. I didn’t want the sad bananas to go to waste, so I scrapped my plans for pate a...

Strawberry Margaritas

Strawberry Margaritas

It’s the weekend, the weather is 82 degrees and sunny, and I’ve just been treated to a delicious sushi buffet for lunch. Could my birthday get any better? Yes, but only if you throw in a pitcher of freshly blended strawberry margaritas (and a nap)! Tequila and I never used to be friends. But, that’s probably because my first experience with it was at a frat party where some guy poured lime juice into a solo cup full of Jose and said “here, have a margarita.” I took one sip and immediately spat it back into the cup. Yuck.  Never again. But, because I never wanted to drink tequila after that, I never got violently sick from it — Jose and I never “broke up,”...

New Orleans-Style Bread Pudding With Whiskey Sauce

New Orleans-Style Bread Pudding With Whiskey Sauce

Happy belated Mardi Gras, everyone! I was planning to make New Orleans-themed foods for Fat Tuesday  this year — gumbo, jambalaya, king cake, beignets, etc. — but work this week has been all kinds of hectic, and I was too tired to cook anything but leftovers in the microwave. Now that Mardi Gras is over, and St. Patty’s Day is around the corner, I was sort of thinking that this recipe could kind of represent both occasions, since bread pudding and whiskey are traditional Irish foods, and Emeril Lagasse tells me this pudding is “New Orleans-style,” whatever that means.  Bread pudding is one of those wonderful, mysterious foods that  I didn’t discover until fairly recently. I’d seen it on menus and in display cases...

Tiramisu

Tiramisu

So last week one of my interns told me that if I could successfully make tiramisu and post about it, his wife would officially start following/reading my blog. Well! I’m never one to turn down new readership, so….challenge accepted. If I had known how difficult it would be to track down all the ingredients for tiramisu, I probably wouldn’t have been quite so enthusiastic about accepting the challenge. I had to hit up to two different Safeways before I managed to get my hands on marscapone cheese, and then neither store had ladyfingers. In fact, none of the store employees had even heard of ladyfingers. “Lady Bingers?” one guy repeated in confusion. “No. Lady FINGERS. They’re cookies that look like fingers? No? Nevermind.” In...

Bridal Shower!

Bridal Shower!

My good friend Charlene is engaged, and this past weekend a few of us threw her a bridal shower in NYC. We were all in charge of different parts of the shower, and my friend Michelle and I were responsible for food/drinks. What does one serve at a bridal shower? Dainty things! Like chocolate covered strawberries, for example. And cupcakes. Michelle and I couldn’t find red food coloring, so these are “brown velvet” cupcakes. Really, they’re just plain ol’ chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Cucumber sandwiches. These weren’t as dainty as the ones I envisioned — we used peasant bread, and that stuff is huge and hearty. We improvised the filling a little bit, but it turned out to be very tasty. These...
