Strawberry Mojitos

Strawberry Mojitos

It’s strawberry season, everyone! The pick-your-own-fruit farms are open for business, the grocery store shelves are loaded with fat, juicy, sweet berries begging to be eaten, AND…   …my strawberry plants have started to bear fruit! Do you know how exciting that is? SO EXCITING! Our little balcony garden is a success! To be fair, I’ve only been able to harvest one berry from my garden so far. There are at least four more on the way, but that’s really not enough to do more than tingle a person’s taste buds. So, to satisfy my warm-weather craving for strawberry-based foods and drinks, I went to the store and picked up 3lbs of strawberries. 3lbs of fruit may a be lot, but we’ve already...

Braised Short Ribs

Braised Short Ribs

I know brunch features heavily in most Mother’s Day celebrations, but who says you can’t do a Mother’s Day dinner instead? Let your mom sleep in past noon, take her shopping and spa-ing, and then impress the pants off of her with a home-cooked dinner of fall-off-the-bone braised short ribs, creamy horseradish mashed potatoes, and lots of red wine. Mmm mmm mmmmmmmm! Intrigued? Then head on over to the Mor.sl blog for my guest post, more pictures, and the recipe. Happy Mother’s Day! Popovers with Orange and Honey Butters

Popovers with Orange and Honey Butters

So, Mother’s Day is tomorrow. Normally I would buy my mom flowers and either take her out for brunch or cook her a delicious meal at home, but…my mom is currently vacationing with my dad in China. Based on our phone calls I gather that she is hanging out with friends, eating delicious 10 course meals, drinking fine teas, and getting foot massages daily (I think they only cost $5/hr or something crazy like that). Tough life! While I’m a little sad that we won’t get to celebrate Mother’s Day together like we usually do, it’s good to know my mom is being properly pampered. And, even though she isn’t around, I can still cook and eat a delicious Mother’s Day brunch for her,...

Mixed Berry Crumb Bars

Mixed Berry Crumb Bars

What happens when you buy a ton of strawberries and blueberries because you’re trying to get more fruit into your diet, but then forget about them because you have a busy week and don’t have time to pack lunch? You get a fridge full of sad, mushy berries, that’s what. Sad, mushy berries that need to be turned into something delicious ASAP before they get really gross. I had a really delicious raspberry crumb bar at a firm lunch last week. It was one of those generic, slightly-processed tasting desserts filled with jam instead of real fruit, but it was tasty and reminded me how much I enjoy fruity crumb bars. So, when I woke up this morning and discovered all those berries languishing...

Nutella S’mores Bars

Nutella S’mores Bars

So, it’s my birthday tomorrow. Usually I’m one of those really annoying 20-somethings that complains about birthdays being nothing more than reminders of my slow and interminable march toward the grave, but I’m feeling pretty zen this year. Life is good, no complaints here. So, instead of being filled with gloomy thoughts of mortality, I’ve been thinking about what dessert I want to eat on my birthday.    If I had actually gotten lemon and lime trees last year like I had planned to, I would have a wealth of citrus fruits right now that I could turn into delicious citrus-y desserts. I didn’t, of course, so I don’t, and can’t. But Dan’s parents, who are awesome, heard me talking about wanting to cultivate fruit trees and bought us...

Strawberry, Banana & Nutella Bread Pudding

Strawberry, Banana & Nutella Bread Pudding

You guys know how much I love Nutella, right? Some people have drinking problems, some people do drugs…I eat Nutella from the jar with a spoon. It’s uncontrollable. Nutella is just soooo good — thick, creamy, nutty, and chocolate-y…It’s like crack for choco-holics. For obvious reasons (i.e., I don’t want to be 500lbs and constantly covered in chocolate), I usually don’t keep any in the house. But, when I stumbled onto Steamy kitchen’s recipe for bread pudding made from croissants slathered with Nutella, I immediately ran out and bought a jar. Best. Decision. EVER. Nutella by itself is a delight, but Nutella with fruit is completely irresistible.  I happened to have about a million pounds of strawberries and bananas in the fridge from a recent BJs trip, so I sliced up a...

Steak and Spinach Quesadilla

Steak and Spinach Quesadilla

So I think it’s safe to say that we’re just a little sick of beef around here. We’ve eaten so many cheese steak sandwiches lately that I feel like I’m going to start moo-ing uncontrollably any second now. And poor Dan, who is forced to eat everything I cook while I sit and stare at him with big puppy eyes (“so, how is it???”), has definitely started looking a little nauseous when he sees me pulling out the tupperware full of leftover prime rib every night. I feel bad, but I refuse to let $60 worth of meat go to waste, so we’re just going to have to suck it up and soldier on. There are worse fates than being forced to eat prime rib every day. Sigh. Variety is...

Pizza Steak Sub

Pizza Steak Sub

I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ve been having the most terrible allergies and allergy-induced asthma lately. I mean, I sneeze and wheeze all season every season, but things have been a lot worse this week. On Monday I was a zombie at work because the night before my allergies kept me awake (and struggling to take a full breath) until 1am. It sucked.  A lot. But you know what didn’t suck? Coming home Monday night and discovering that Dan had cleaned the house from top to bottom. In an effort to get rid of all the dust mites and cat dander (and who knows what else) that were keeping me up at night,  he vacuumed, dusted, and laundered everything. He even did the dishes! And, because he is the...

Philly Cheese Steak, Part II

Philly Cheese Steak, Part II

When I posted my first Philly Cheese Steak recipe on reddit.com, I knew I’d get a hailstorm of protests from cheese steak purists and Philly natives. Where’s the cheese? The meat isn’t chopped right! Why did you put peppers in there?? You’re doing it all wrong!!! Calm down, guys. I know. It’s cool. I’ll make it up to you, I promise. See? I sliced a whole bunch of prime rib into thin sheets, fried it up with some onions, stuffed everything into a toasted hoagie roll and poured on creamy, gooey, drippy Provolone cheese sauce. I couldn’t bring myself to go with Cheese Whiz. Honestly, I’m not even positive where to find it in the grocery store. Oh, and I didn’t have mushrooms on...

Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies

Carrot Cake Whoopie Pies

Happy Easter, everyone! This is going to be a super short post because I’m supposed to hide Easter eggs for my friend Emily in a little bit and I’m running kind of late. Sundays are not conducive for getting things done. So, why am I playing the Easter Bunny for Emily? Because she has awesome parents who send her candy and cash-filled eggs every year and ask her friends to hide them around her apartment for a fun, grown-up Easter egg hunt. They send her one egg for every year she’s been alive, and pack a little bag of treats for the Easter Bunny too. Isn’t that the greatest tradition ever? (Laying around like this all morning is why I’ve gotten nothing done…) Anyway,...
