Nutella S’mores Bars

Nutella S’mores Bars

So, it’s my birthday tomorrow. Usually I’m one of those really annoying 20-somethings that complains about birthdays being nothing more than reminders of my slow and interminable march toward the grave, but I’m feeling pretty zen this year. Life is good, no complaints here. So, instead of being filled with gloomy thoughts of mortality, I’ve been thinking about what dessert I want to eat on my birthday.    If I had actually gotten lemon and lime trees last year like I had planned to, I would have a wealth of citrus fruits right now that I could turn into delicious citrus-y desserts. I didn’t, of course, so I don’t, and can’t. But Dan’s parents, who are awesome, heard me talking about wanting to cultivate fruit trees and bought us...

Strawberry, Banana & Nutella Bread Pudding

Strawberry, Banana & Nutella Bread Pudding

You guys know how much I love Nutella, right? Some people have drinking problems, some people do drugs…I eat Nutella from the jar with a spoon. It’s uncontrollable. Nutella is just soooo good — thick, creamy, nutty, and chocolate-y…It’s like crack for choco-holics. For obvious reasons (i.e., I don’t want to be 500lbs and constantly covered in chocolate), I usually don’t keep any in the house. But, when I stumbled onto Steamy kitchen’s recipe for bread pudding made from croissants slathered with Nutella, I immediately ran out and bought a jar. Best. Decision. EVER. Nutella by itself is a delight, but Nutella with fruit is completely irresistible.  I happened to have about a million pounds of strawberries and bananas in the fridge from a recent BJs trip, so I sliced up a...

Dan in the Kitchen — Chocolate Chip Cocoa Brownies

Dan in the Kitchen — Chocolate Chip Cocoa Brownies

OK, so two things about this post should blow your mind: (1) this is the only brownie recipe on my blog so far (how is this possible when I love chocolate as much as I do?!) and (2) Dan is back in the kitchen…baking…from scratch. Actually, if you know Dan at all, that second thing probably blows your mind three times over. It’s not that Dan doesn’t bake — he has, on occasion, been known to bake things. For example, there was the chocolate chip cookie cake he made me for my birthday when we started dating. (It was heart shaped and frosted, and super delicious.) And he sometimes made brownies for himself when he was living alone. But this is his first time baking without...

Strawberry Crepe Cupcakes

Strawberry Crepe Cupcakes

As a general rule, I don’t love cupcakes unless they’re in carrot cake or chocolate-form. Vanilla, especially, is a very “blah” flavor for me. I would never eat a vanilla cupcake voluntarily. They’re boring, and I’ve been forced to eat far too many over-frosted, over-sugared vanilla treats at birthday parties over the years. But these cupcakes…I would eat them again, and do it happily. They’re dense but soft, extremely moist, perfectly sweet, and packed with — dare I say it — wonderful vanilla flavor. So, why are these called “Strawberry Crepe Cupcakes”? Because that’s what I had in mind when I was making them, and that’s what they taste like.  Sweet vanilla crepes filled with fresh strawberries and Nutella. Mmm, mmm, mmm. Purists might say that these don’t really taste like strawberry crepes, but that’s...

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

The last time I had an Irish Car Bomb was senior year of college. As I recall, I didn’t even really want to drink it. I hate beer, and I stay away from whiskey if I can help it, but my friend Melissa told me that if I chugged the drink really quickly all the ingredients would mix together and taste exactly like a chocolate milkshake. She LIED. The Car Bomb was nothing like a chocolate milkshake. As I choked down the thick fizzy brew, all I could taste was the bitter yeastiness of Guinness, the burn of cheap whiskey (Canadian Mist), and the faintest hint of sweetness from the generic cream liqueur we bought instead of real Baileys. It. Was. Not. Delicious. I was not happy....

Chewy Chocolate Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

Chewy Chocolate Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

OK, raise your hand if you liked oatmeal cookies when you were a kid. Anyone? No? You in the back, put your hand down, I don’t believe you. Nobody liked oatmeal cookies when they were kids. Those hard, lumpy, raisin-filled things were are always the reject cookies at kids’ birthday parties, lingering on the table long after all the chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies had disappeared. Everybody knew that oatmeal cookies were gross. At least, that’s what I used to think. Then I accidentally bit into a soft and chewy homemade oatmeal raisin cookie one day, thinking it was chocolate chip, and realized that oatmeal cookies are actually delicious.  And, they’re good for you! Maybe. Aren’t oats full of fiber and good at...

Nutty Nutella Banana Bread

Nutty Nutella Banana Bread

So I’ve been told that today is National Banana Bread Day. This is the first time I’ve heard of this “holiday”, but I’m more than happy to celebrate. I love banana bread! It was one of the first things I learned how to bake as a kid — I still remember cutting the recipe out of my Sunday comics one day and taping it into my “recipe book”. I’m pretty sure I made that recipe a billion times between the ages of 10 and 18, but it’s still one of the things my mom’s favorite things to eat for breakfast. Who can blame her? Banana bread is delicious. I’ve said this before, but Dan and I always seem to have overripe bananas lying around. We buy really green bananas over...

Boston Cream Cupcakes

Boston Cream Cupcakes

It’s T-2 hours and 11 minutes until the Superbowl, guys. I haven’t glanced at a clock in a couple hours, so how do I know that? I’ll tell you how – Dan has been counting down the hours, every hour, on the hour, out loud, since he woke up this morning. Yeah. He is really excited about this game. Can’t really blame him for being all hyped up, though. His team is in the game, and they’re playing against — from what I can tell based on Dan’s enthusiastic heckling — their mortal enemy. Dan’s from Massachusetts, so you can probably guess which team he’s rooting for. The Greatest Team the World Has Ever Seen, with the Greatest Quarterback God Ever Created. Obviously. (I’m not allowed to say...

Nutella Double Chip Cookies

Nutella Double Chip Cookies

Hello, my name is Tina, and I am a Nutella addict. I eat it slathered on anything remotely slather-able so that it doesn’t look like I’m just eating Nutella, I order strawberry and Nutella crepes so that I can very casually suck out all the filling, and I have to stick any jar of the stuff that somehow makes it way into my shopping cart in the freezer because (1) out of sight, out of mind (sometimes) and (2) frozen Nutella is harder to eat with a spoon. I’ve managed to kick my Nutella habit for a couple months now, but recently one of my favorite food bloggers has been posting recipe after recipe featuring Nutella baked into delectrable treats, and it’s really put my...

Triple Chocolate Cake Balls

Triple Chocolate Cake Balls

Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe it’s 2012 already? 20-frickin-12. That means it’s been 20 years since I came to America, 15 years since we left Texas, almost 10 years since high school, a little less than 7 years since Dan and I got together, 5 years since college, 2 years since I left the warm cocoon of higher education/student life forever, and a little over a year since Dan and I successfully navigated the murky waters of home ownership. Yikes! Where does the time go? I have a feeling 2012 is going to be a good year though. New job, new fiance, new furniture (Dan’s uncle gave us a gorgeous Queen Anne hutch over the holidays), new power suits (necessary evil) and, of...
