Molten Lava Cake

Molten Lava Cake

So Dan and I bought an elliptical machine today. My mom told me a few weeks ago that I was looking fatter than ever, so exercise has been on my mind a lot lately. I went running a few times…embarked on an 18 mile bike ride one day…hiked in the Great Falls….and then hit a slump. I blame the weather. Cold, wet, and windy…there’s no way I’m going out into that. Last week I became convinced that buying exercise equipment would solve all my problems: I could get a great cardio work out at home whenever I wanted, and if the weather was good I could still go for a run outside. Boom, just like that my newly accumulated flab would disappear and my...

New Orleans-Style Bread Pudding With Whiskey Sauce

New Orleans-Style Bread Pudding With Whiskey Sauce

Happy belated Mardi Gras, everyone! I was planning to make New Orleans-themed foods for Fat Tuesday  this year — gumbo, jambalaya, king cake, beignets, etc. — but work this week has been all kinds of hectic, and I was too tired to cook anything but leftovers in the microwave. Now that Mardi Gras is over, and St. Patty’s Day is around the corner, I was sort of thinking that this recipe could kind of represent both occasions, since bread pudding and whiskey are traditional Irish foods, and Emeril Lagasse tells me this pudding is “New Orleans-style,” whatever that means.  Bread pudding is one of those wonderful, mysterious foods that  I didn’t discover until fairly recently. I’d seen it on menus and in display cases...

Samoa Cookie Bars

Samoa Cookie Bars

What is it about Girl Scout cookies that gets people so crazy? As soon as cookie season starts, pint-sized dealers pop up on every corner, and suddenly everyone is fighting with each other to get their hands on as many Thin Mints, Tagalongs, and Do-Si-Dos as they can before sprinting home to devour their sugary contraband. And god forbid you try to eat someone else’s cookies without their permission… Yikes! Maybe it’s because I never joined the Girl Scouts, but I’ve never been that wild about their cookies. I mean, I’ll eat them, and they’re delicious, but I certainly would never assault anyone for them. Plus, now that prices have risen to $4.00 a pop, it just doesn’t seem worth it to squander what little cash I...

Tiramisu

Tiramisu

So last week one of my interns told me that if I could successfully make tiramisu and post about it, his wife would officially start following/reading my blog. Well! I’m never one to turn down new readership, so….challenge accepted. If I had known how difficult it would be to track down all the ingredients for tiramisu, I probably wouldn’t have been quite so enthusiastic about accepting the challenge. I had to hit up to two different Safeways before I managed to get my hands on marscapone cheese, and then neither store had ladyfingers. In fact, none of the store employees had even heard of ladyfingers. “Lady Bingers?” one guy repeated in confusion. “No. Lady FINGERS. They’re cookies that look like fingers? No? Nevermind.” In...

Apple Cheesecake Cupcakes

Apple Cheesecake Cupcakes

Last night I was seized with the most irresistible urge to bake something. But what to bake? Nothing chocolate. I’m sick of chocolate, if you can believe it. Maybe a pie? Nah, too much work — no pre-made pie crusts in the freezer, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to start rolling out my own crust at 9pm on a Wednesday. Then I remembered that Dan had been talking earlier in the day about his love of apple turnovers and sugary apple filling. Apple cheesecake cupcakes are topped with something similar to apple pie filling… The first time I made this recipe was 2 or 3 years ago, the summer of my 1L year. I was working at the FDA in Rockville, MD,...

Homemade Hostess Cupcakes

Homemade Hostess Cupcakes

Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody! Hope you all have someone nice to share it with, and if not, hopefully you have a ton of delicious chocolate treats on hand for immediate consumption. That’s the only reason anyone celebrates Valentine’s Day, right? An excuse to go on an all-out, gluttonous chocolate binge? Yes? Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, I’ve been thinking long and hard about what I wanted to make for my Valentine’s post. Something chocolate-y, obviously, but beyond that there were too many possibilities. Chocolate truffles? Maybe. Molten lava cake? Mmmmm. Chocolate covered strawberries? Decadent and healthy-ish, and possibly an aphrodisiac! But at the end of the day I settled on homemade Hostess cupcakes. There’s something about reproducing homemade versions of popular commercial brand foods...

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles

So I’m going to a wine and cheese party tomorrow night, and I’ve been put in charge of making something chocolate-y to go with the dessert wines. Something chocolate-y? So many things come to mind, but I’ve been dying to make these chocolate chip cookie dough truffles since I saw them posted on my friend Lucy’s blog last summer.  No matter how you look at it, these truffles fit the dessert specifications of the wine and cheese party perfectly. They’re chocolate-y on the inside and out, they’re just the right size for individual consumption, and they’re going to be delicious with port. Plus, they are egg-less, so they can be eaten freely without the usual fear of salmonella poisoning associated with raw cookie dough....

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake

Mmmm, strawberry shortcake. I’ve been dying to make this since I saw the recipe posted on The Art of Being Perfect. Of course, things being what they are in my kitchen, I had issues with one of the key ingredients — the strawberries. I’m pretty sure strawberries aren’t in season anymore, and there was no way the sad, wrinkled specimens on display in my local grocery store were going into my shortcake. Fortunately, I had a big bag of frozen strawberries in the freezer. Unfortunately, I’d forgotten that that particular bag of frozen strawberries had thawed then re-frozen into one big red mess a few months ago. So, instead of adorning my cake with fat, juicy strawberries, I found myself hacking at the big red...

Homemade Oreo Cookies

Homemade Oreo Cookies

This week has been a blur of cookie baking. Not cake, not pie…just cookies. Thumbprint cookies, key lime pie cookies…and now homemade oreo cookies. Phew!  Why so many cookies, you ask? Because just as I was pondering what to get everyone at the office for Christmas, the good people at HR sent out an email last week reminding us that while it’s holiday season and everyone is full of good cheer, there are rules for gift giving. No bribes. No gift/job offer exchanges. Nothing expensive. Luckily, nobody wants to bribe a law clerk, I have a job, and I can’t afford to buy expensive gifts anyway. What I can do is make lots and lots of cookies. Cookies for everyone! Festive thumbprint cookies for the...

Almost No-Bake Cheesecake

Almost No-Bake Cheesecake

True or false: I have been dying to get my hands on some mini spring-form pans so that I can make adorable, baby-sized cheesecakes? True. So true! I’m a total sucker for miniaturized versions of regular things. In college, my dorm was filled with all kinds of crap that I bought for the sole reason that they were tiny and cute. Miniature condiment jars, tiny milk cartons full of candy, baby staplers…I’ve gotten better with age, but sometimes I still can’t help myself. Look at how cute my new pans are! And they’re so useful for portion-control. Now, instead of filling my fridge with a full-sized, fat-filled cheesecake, I can make tiny, guilt-free portions of the same delicious treat. Nevermind that Dan thinks it defeats...
