Chewy Chocolate Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

Chewy Chocolate Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

OK, raise your hand if you liked oatmeal cookies when you were a kid. Anyone? No? You in the back, put your hand down, I don’t believe you. Nobody liked oatmeal cookies when they were kids. Those hard, lumpy, raisin-filled things were are always the reject cookies at kids’ birthday parties, lingering on the table long after all the chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies had disappeared. Everybody knew that oatmeal cookies were gross. At least, that’s what I used to think. Then I accidentally bit into a soft and chewy homemade oatmeal raisin cookie one day, thinking it was chocolate chip, and realized that oatmeal cookies are actually delicious.  And, they’re good for you! Maybe. Aren’t oats full of fiber and good at...

Boston Cream Cupcakes

Boston Cream Cupcakes

It’s T-2 hours and 11 minutes until the Superbowl, guys. I haven’t glanced at a clock in a couple hours, so how do I know that? I’ll tell you how – Dan has been counting down the hours, every hour, on the hour, out loud, since he woke up this morning. Yeah. He is really excited about this game. Can’t really blame him for being all hyped up, though. His team is in the game, and they’re playing against — from what I can tell based on Dan’s enthusiastic heckling — their mortal enemy. Dan’s from Massachusetts, so you can probably guess which team he’s rooting for. The Greatest Team the World Has Ever Seen, with the Greatest Quarterback God Ever Created. Obviously. (I’m not allowed to say...

Loaded Mashed Potato Cakes

Loaded Mashed Potato Cakes

Guys, I slept until noon today. It was amazing. To be honest, I probably could have slept for at least another hour or two, but I felt kind of guilty. It’s not like I had errands I needed get done or anything, but Dan had been awake since 9am, and even the cats, who are without a doubt the laziest creatures on the planet, were up and about. Bastards. It’s been a while since I’ve cooked any real food for us to eat, so when I finally managed to haul my ass out of bed, I figured it was time to get back in the kitchen. I didn’t have to ask Dan what he wanted — in Dan’s mind, weekends were made for bacon-eating,...

Strawberries and Cream Pie

Strawberries and Cream Pie

Happy Chinese Lunar New Year, everyone! I wanted to make something special in honor of the holiday, but I haven’t had much time to cook lately. If I get a chance, I might put together a post featuring some of my favorite Asian recipes. But not today. Today I want to talk to you about pie. Specifically, a luscious, creamy pie loaded with strawberries, drizzled with chocolate, on a sweet graham cracker crust. A pie that’s so rich, so decadent, yet somehow so light that every bite just melts in your mouth.  Mmmmmm. Now, I know I tend to get really gushy and poetic every time I talk about desserts, but trust me when I say that this is a really good pie. If you...

Nutella Double Chip Cookies

Nutella Double Chip Cookies

Hello, my name is Tina, and I am a Nutella addict. I eat it slathered on anything remotely slather-able so that it doesn’t look like I’m just eating Nutella, I order strawberry and Nutella crepes so that I can very casually suck out all the filling, and I have to stick any jar of the stuff that somehow makes it way into my shopping cart in the freezer because (1) out of sight, out of mind (sometimes) and (2) frozen Nutella is harder to eat with a spoon. I’ve managed to kick my Nutella habit for a couple months now, but recently one of my favorite food bloggers has been posting recipe after recipe featuring Nutella baked into delectrable treats, and it’s really put my...

Triple Chocolate Cake Balls

Triple Chocolate Cake Balls

Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe it’s 2012 already? 20-frickin-12. That means it’s been 20 years since I came to America, 15 years since we left Texas, almost 10 years since high school, a little less than 7 years since Dan and I got together, 5 years since college, 2 years since I left the warm cocoon of higher education/student life forever, and a little over a year since Dan and I successfully navigated the murky waters of home ownership. Yikes! Where does the time go? I have a feeling 2012 is going to be a good year though. New job, new fiance, new furniture (Dan’s uncle gave us a gorgeous Queen Anne hutch over the holidays), new power suits (necessary evil) and, of...

Christmas Sugar Cookies

Christmas Sugar Cookies

On the 9th day of Christmas…our friends Amy and Brad invited us over for a holiday/cookie-decorating party. They throw the best parties with the most delicious and deceptively lethal cocktails, so there was no way that Dan and I were going to miss out on this one! Plus, they asked me to make the cookies for decorating, so…just call me Tina the Cookie Elf. I was originally supposed to make sugar cookies and gingerbread men for the party, but between truffle-making and oil-infusing, I didn’t have time to start baking until Saturday morning. And, the problem with both sugar cookies and gingerbread men is that you’ve got to chill the dough and then roll it out over and over again so that you can individually...

Oreo Truffles

Oreo Truffles

When I was a kid, the holidays were all about “receiving” — gifts from my parents, gifts from my relatives, gifts from Santa…Nothing made me happier than seeing the stack of presents under our Christmas tree get bigger with each wave of guests that came by. Ah, childhood…Luckily, as I’ve gotten older and started having money of my own to buy stuff, I’ve discovered the joys of giving. Because I love shopping, I’m usually a big fan of store-bought gifts. But lately I’ve started to warm up to the idea of homemade presents. They’re a great cost-saving measure for anyone who’s in a tight spot financially, they’re thoughtful and personal, and they’re usually at least partially re-usable and eco-friendly. I’m not craftsy enough to...

DIY Marzipan

DIY Marzipan

On the third day of Christmas, my kitchen gives to you…homemade marzipan! More specifically, homemade marzipan tinted with Christmas colors and molded into adorable Christmas-themed shapes. Did you know that in Italy, marzipan served over Christmas is painted with fruit coloring and shaped to look like miniature fruit? That’s actually how I remember eating marzipan as a kid — someone would usually gift us with a box of the stuff during the holidays, and I always thought they were too cute to eat. I considered making banana and peach-shaped marzipan this year, but I didn’t want to spend hours tinting candy to just the right colors to look like fruit. Besides, how cute is that little Santa? Even if I were a marzipan fiend,...

Triple Delight Cookies

Triple Delight Cookies

A lot of food bloggers have started their days-before-Christmas count downs already, and the result has been an explosion of posts featuring all kinds of different Christmas cookies, egg nog, gingerbread houses, and the like. Talk about peer pressure! I had originally wanted to wait until exactly 12 days before Christmas to start my list, but quickly realized that if I did that, I would have to cook/blog every single day for almost 2 weeks. I love my blog, and I love my readers, but…that’s just not going to happen. So, I hereby declare that today is the first day of Christmas here at Just Putzing Around the Kitchen; and on this first day of Christmas, I give to you…super rich, super chocolate-y, so-good-it’ll-give-you-chills,...
