Copyright

If I learned anything from my Copyrights class in law school, it’s that I should make sure no one tries to take credit for my expressions of creative genius (ha!). So, just in case Professor Schecter ever stumbles onto this website…

…All text and photographs in this website are the copyrighted property of Just Putzing Around the Kitchen, all rights reserved.

If for some reason you want to use any of my pictures, please send me an email before you do it — trust me, I will probably be unbelievably flattered and give you permission right away. All I ask is to be credited.

If you want to re-post a recipe from my blog, that’s fine too. The more exposure, the better, I say. Just don’t forget to link back to the original blog post.

THANKS!

While searching for pumpkin pie recipes I found your site. (I can’t believe your husband has never ate pumpkin pie.)

My question has to do with copyrighting. I am in the processing of starting a blog. I have been blogging, but have not been brave enough to publish online until I (kind of) know what I am doing. What steps did you take to have your site copyrighted? Do you have anything more you would share regarding protecting your work product?

Great question! I should tell you right off the bat that I’m not an expert on intellectual property law, and you’re probably better off consulting someone who knows more about copyright law.

Now, as I understand it, copyright automatically attaches upon the creation of an original work. Basically, as soon as you write something, draw something, or take a photo of something, as long as it’s your original work, you own the copyright to that writing/art/photo. You don’t have to register your copyright, but doing so makes it easier for you to enforce your exclusive rights to the work later on if/when issues arise. If you want more information on the official steps for copyright registration, you should check out the wiki page for “copyright law of the US.” (Scroll down to the “Procedures” section.)

Hope that helps! Good luck :)

Are you okay with being pinned on pinterest? There’s a lot of debate about whether pinterest is infringing on copyright laws – so I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! Your recipes are amazing!

Go right ahead and pin my recipes to Pinterest! I’m generally fine with people posting my recipes/pictures online, as long as I get credit and/or a link back. I appreciate your asking though!
